It’s been a hard few months, coming out of a long relationship and facing up to various personal and professional failures, watching as different governmental and planetary systems start to go unmistakably off the rails. Usually I try to focus on the small scale, the here and now, but for the past few days even that has seemed ominous and terrible. The news is all people killing themselves, which of course doesn’t help.
I turn to music in moments like this, and this time all I’ve been able to listen to is atonal jazz. The abrasiveness feels right somehow, the sense of the world coming apart. Once you dive into it, it’s hard to come out. A friend once told me that when he started listening to rap, all other music just sounded like bullshit. I suppose a version of that is happening to me now. I can’t really listen to anything else.
The best art expresses something we feel but can’t articulate ourselves. We go back to it because it’s the only way to pick out the thread, which would otherwise go unnoticed. This is abrasive music but it’s familiar too; I feel like this all the time. Hearing it from the outside makes it seem like a response to the world, which maybe it always was. Coltrane in particular makes it feel somehow livable – not just that I could survive this, but that I could feel this way for the rest of my life and still find meaning in it.
